Carpenter Canyon Creek

Did you know there is a year-round flowing creek just behind Mount Charleston? Typically people know Mount Charleston for its hikes, occasional skiing, snow boarding and sledding. It's forested wilderness is an oasis to the desert valley below it. While going to the Nevada Department of Wildlife office to renew my fishing/hunting license; I received a magazine on fishing Nevada. My buddy and I found a marked location for fishing on Mt. Charleston; hopping on google maps we found the spot, Carpenter Canyon Creek. After a 10 mile plus 4x4 road we made it. The spring/snow-melt creek was small but loaded with Nevada's state fish, the Lahontan cutthroat trout. Caught and released 6 between my buddy and I. It was a stunning day trip and highly recommend it if you have a vehicle to get there. Located in deep draw of the mountains, vegetation, and rock formations also make it an excellent hike. If you have any questions about fishing or the outdoors, just shoot me a message and I'll do my best to help you out!

  1. I didn't know we have a state fish! The Lahontan cutthroat trout, cool :-) I have always been a city slicker but would like to explore the outdoors. Have you explored central or northern Nevada?

  2. I love this! I go on a huge fishing trip with my dad every year. We've gone to the keys and Canada, and it's cool to know there's a nice little spot here locally!

  3. That's super cool. I myself am not a nature person, so I would never personally go out to explore this. It is nice to know that the options is there.

  4. Huh..I'm not into fishing, but I love the wildlife and natural environment aspect to this a lot. I will definetely shoot you a message if I'm interested. I miss walking through green trees and blue streams since I've been in Nevada and would love to find some places to do so here. Looks fun.

  5. So the funny thing is that I actually like fishing and have been many times, I've just never actually caught any fish myself lol but I do enjoy the activity, just wish I could actually catch a fish one of these days.

  6. I've never fished (only had a few goldfish). But wow, I love hearing about those kind of local treasures. I'll need to inform my uncle about this place since he often goes fishing with my cousin.

  7. I have heard about the different creeks in Mt. Charleston but I have never been out to explore. I just recently found out that there is a small community up there.

  8. How great that something so "foreign" is in our backyards. My dad used to take me and my sister to fish at Lake Mead. He should us how to prepare the line, the anchovy, and gut the fish. I had forgotten about that, so thank you for helping bring that sweet memory to back to life.

  9. It is really amazing to know there is a different version of the desert just around us. My daughter is sick of the desert and always wanted to see nature specially river and trees. I also wanted to learn fishing. I am so thankful you post about Carpenter Canyon Creek. You just planned our weekend :)

  10. This looks like an exciting adventure! I haven't been out travelling ever since the pandemic. Unfortunately I've been stuck inside of my house since March of 2020, but I always enjoy being around nature and just observing it.

  11. I think that's amazing, I don't think I have actually been up to Mount Charleston, if I have it must have been long ago and I just forgot.
